I need an experts opinion on 3ds Max 2019. I have been using version 2015 and 2016 for last couple of years, and since I finally updated my Windows 7 to Windows 10, I decided to upgrade all my software (some of them are students versions). I installed 3ds Max 2019 and I want to know what news does it bring to the rendering experience? Also, is Vray still compatible with 3ds Max, or did they switch to another rendering platform? How stable is the 2019 version and what kind of plugin/software support does it have? Should I downgrade to 2017 / 2018 if it's still better?
Thanks a lot everyone. I'm an architect and I mainly use Rhinoceros, Revit and Lumion, but I need 3ds Max for occasional professional renderings.
Just to be clear, V-Ray is not an Autodesk product and doesn't come bundled with 3ds max. It's a third party rendering plugin created by Chaos Group, and needs to be purchased separately. Up until the latest version of 3ds Max, mental ray was included with max, even though it was owned by NVIDIA. To replace mental ray, Arnold is now included in 3ds max 2019. In 2016, Autodesk purchased the company that created Arnold. There are some technical differences between the two engines, but V-Ray is by far more popular.
It will likely be easier to get help and support from its user base for some time, until (if) Arnold catches on. If 2019 gives you any issues, try 2018 it's solid for me. 2017 is garbage. I still use 2015 at home because it's so damn stable but I'll probably upgrade soon. Also as said, vray is probably the most popular render engine.
I'm an archviz artist and have a professional level of vray knowledge as it's still our render engine at the studio for now. That being said, I've begun playing with Corona, and I'd recommend it over vray. Especially since you don't sound like you need to spend 3 years learning the intricacies of vray.
I spent a total of four work days modeling, lighting, texturing and compositing two scenes, and learning Corona from scratch and this was the result: so when they say Corona is simple to learn they're not kidding. Vray is far far more complex, and has some serious fine tuning capabilities that Corona lacks, but I'm loving Corona so far.
